Mathematics

The module #Pupils vs Machine can be used in maths lessons.

The winning strategy of the game Nim can then be explained in mathematical terms and the pupils can be introduced to the method of proof by mathematical induction (the theory of induction does not yet have to be introduced). More details on this can be found in 5.6 More on the topic.

The skills1 that this is intended to develop in the pupils are:

  • explore mathematical situations, make assumptions and explain them in greater detail,
  • assess the plausibility of assumptions using examples and counter-examples,
  • construct complex arguments and explain the individual steps.

These skills can be taught well by studying the winning strategy of Nim and developing reasons and evidence to support this strategy.

VIESO (Life and Society)

The module can be combined with the field of artificial intelligence within the subject Life and Society. It fits in with the topics ‘Ambivalence of technological progress’ and ‘Consequences of technology’, which are covered in year 9.²

¹ Mathématiques – Compétences disciplinaires attendues à la fin de la classe de 6e et à la fin de la classe de 4e
² See the general curriculum for the subject Life and Society.
